Harry Shorstein recenty concluded his fifth term as the State Attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit (covering Duval County, Clay County and Nassau County in Northeast Florida). In 2008, he decided not to run for a sixth term and to return to private practice with Shorstein & Lasnetski, LLC.

Mr. Shorstein attended the University of Florida for college and law school. After graduating from law school, he served as a Captain in the 3rd Marine Division in Vietnam. Upon his return, he worked as a Division Head at the Jacksonville Office of the Public Defender. After leaving that office, he spent several years as a Division Head and then Chief Assistant at the Office of the State Attorney. After the State Attorney’s Office, Mr. Shorstein served as General Counsel for the City of Jacksonville.

In 1991, Mr. Shorstein became the State Attorney for the Fourth Judicial Circuit. He held that position for almost eighteen years until deciding not run again in 2008. As the State Attorney for the Jacksonville area, he tried a variety of criminal cases, including over 30 murder cases, all of which he won. He also implemented a groundbreaking juvenile justice program that focused on rehabilitation and education that won national acclaim and was copied by prosecutors across the country. His extensive experience and accomplishments as a trial attorney have been chronicled by 60 Minutes, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw, The New York Times, USA Today, U.S. News & World Report and others state, local and national media outlets. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.

After over two decades of public service, Mr. Shorstein decided to return to private practice where he spent 15 years representing the rights and interests of individuals and businesses prior to becoming the State Attorney. In private practice, he defended clients on criminal matters in state and federal court, including complex white collar cases. He handled serious and complex wrongful death and personal injuries cases, and he represented companies in all varieties of business disputes. Another area where he has developed extensive skills and experience is in the representation of professionals in civil litigation and in front of licensing and other administrative boards.

She went on to become a Public Defender where she conducted major criminal matters such as second strike life without parole cases. Clay Smith has a very diverse background, having grown up in Florida, California, and Iran. Clay attended high school in Stockton, California (Benjamin Franklin) and in Jacksonville, Florida (Ed White and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts). After high school he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he served honorably for 5+ years until his humanitarian discharge to provide living assistance for his younger brother, also a Marine, who broke his neck and was rendered quadriplegic.

During the period shortly after his discharge, Clay performed a variety of jobs, including ditch digging. Along the way, he found his love and married her. She had two small children and together they were a ready-made family. Seeking to settle down, he found a permanent position with Melrose Apartments as a technical manual writer. His love of computers and the Information and Technology (IT) field drew him to work in that sector. Clay became an on-site time and attendance software and hardware installer for ADP and traveled extensively throughout the US. He obtained several prestigious certifications in the IT field, including Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, CompTia's A+ and Network+ certifications and over 14 Hewlett Packard certifications just to name a few. Having reached the top tier in his field with ADP, he went to work as a Y2K team lead for Blue Cross and Blue Shield. One day he got a call from an IT recruiter who simply asked, "How'd you like to work on rockets?" Having answered in the affirmative, Clay went to work at Kennedy Space Center as a systems engineer for NASA. Following the end of that contract, Clay went to work at the headquarters of the IRS in Washington, D.C. The travel became too much as the children were now in their teens and needed the presence of their step-dad at home. Clay returned to Jacksonville and went to work at Sea Star Line, Inc., as an IT specialist. At this time, he also began his secondary education at Florida Community College at Jacksonville. He achieved his Associates of Arts degree and then transferred to the University of North Florida. Clay and his wife decided that he should leave his position at Sea Star Line and concentrate on his education. He graduated from UNF with honors and was accepted for enrollment into Florida Coastal School of Law. While in law school, Clay focused his studies on international and family law; including an inaugural study abroad program to Clermont-Ferrand, France to study international law and human rights. Clay's wife and he formed Smith Legal, P.A., so that they could practice in the manner which allows them to provide a personal, practical and professional experience for their clients.

Clay enjoys surfing, kayaking, gourmet cooking, reading and studying histories of other cultures and spending time with his family and friends. He is an expert on the Aztec, Inca, and Maya and also the Roman Empire. However, his two main loves (excluding his wife of course) are computers and international travel. Clay has traveled to more than 13 countries and is still counting!

Bryan Gowdy is a Florida Bar board-certified appellate specialist who has briefed and argued numerous appeals in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court and the Supreme Court of Florida. AV-rated by Martindale-Hubbell, Bryan is listed as a Legal Elite by Florida Trend magazine and as a Super Lawyer in the top 5% of Florida lawyers by Law and Politics magazine.

Raised in Tampa, Bryan Gowdy received his undergraduate degree in international economics from the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, where he played NCAA Division I soccer and was a scholarship Naval ROTC student. After graduation, Bryan served as an active-duty naval line officer on ships home-ported in Italy and Japan and deployed to the Persian Gulf. Bryan later entered the Naval Reserves and became commanding officer of a 60-person reserve unit.

After leaving active-duty, Bryan returned home to Florida and entered the University of Florida College of Law, where he graduated first in his class. He also was inducted into the Order of the Coif and served as Management Editor of the Florida Law Review.

After law school, Bryan served as a judicial law clerk, first for Judge Maurice M. Paul of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida and then for Judge Susan H. Black of the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. Following his clerkship with Judge Black, Bryan joined the Jacksonville office of McGuire Woods, where he practiced primarily commercial litigation at the trial and appellate level. Bryan handled appeals in state and federal courts on commercial and class action matters, as well as some matters of family law, post-conviction relief, and civil rights.

Bryan subsequently joined Rebecca Creed at the firm to be a full-time appellate lawyer. In addition to his work in commercial matters and class actions, Bryan's substantive practice runs the gamut from criminal to family law to personal injury and products liability appeals. Bryan frequently lectures at legal seminars on appellate topics.

Bryan has devoted numerous hours to pro bono cases. In 2009, he earned the Pro Bono Award from the Appellate Practice Section of The Florida Bar. Currently, he is the chairperson of the pro bono committee of the Florida Bar's appellate practice section, and he serves on the board of directors for Jacksonville Area Legal Aid.

Bryan is past chairperson of the appellate law section of the Jacksonville Bar Association. He also is an alumnus of the First District Appellate American Inn of Court and the Chester Bedell Inn of Court. He was a barrister in both inns.
