Q. Married filing jointly, husband owes money to IRS (FL)
A: Suppose your husband incurred the debt before you guys married, then the debt is in his name alone. However, if the tax debt occurred during the marriage and you file Married Filing Joint, you are also responsible for the tax debt. The best way to protect yourself from having any refunds or credits that are due taken is to file Married Filing Separate. However, be warned that you will lose out on some credits using this method
Q. Can my taxes be garnished for a vehicle repossession?
A: The IRS may have kept a portion or all of your refund due to a balance due stemming from a 1099-C Cancellation of Debt Issue to both of you. You may have gone through an audit when the IRS reached out To you regarding a potential tax debt From the audit. You potentially have a few options to correct, but your window is closing very quickly.
