Joy Gomez-Gonzalez grew up in Hong Kong where her parents were missionaries. It was the stories she heard while teaching English as a volunteer at a Vietnamese refugee camp in Kowloon that inspired her to become an immigration attorney.
Joy Gomez-Gonzalez attended San Francisco State University and was Chair of the La Raza Student Organization.
While at SFSU, she worked with migrant farm workers, their children, and other immigrant populations throughout California. In 1999, Joy graduated with a BA in La Raza Studies.
While attending Stetson University College of Law, she participated in multiple mission trips in the Dominican Republic and volunteered for two years at a Legal Clinic providing immigration assistance.
After graduating from law school in 2005, she served migrant farmworkers through Florida Rural Legal Services, ran a BIA accredited immigration legal clinic for Catholic Charities providing assistance to asylum, U-Visa and VAWA seekers, and clerked for a boutique immigration law firm specializing in immigrant and non-immigrant visa applications (B-1, H-1B, H-2B, H-4, O-1, P-1, P-3, and many more).
Since moving to Washington State, she has taught "Human Rights and Economic Migration," and "Conversational Spanish" at Evergreen State College.
