Alastair Clarke
Immigration and Refugee LawyerAlastair’s practice encompasses all areas of immigration and refugee law, including Manitoba Provincial Nominee (MPNP) applications, family sponsorships, work and study permits, temporary visas for family and friends to visit, refugee cases and business class applications. In addition, Alastair has vast experience conducting hearings at all levels of the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada and at the Federal Court of Canada. In 2003, Alastair worked at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC and focused on a project with the Inter-American Court of Human Rights, based in Costa Rica. This work led to a career in law that focuses on social justice issues, professionalism and making sure governments are held accountable. He was also elected Vice President of the Society of Professional and Graduate Students (SGPS) and worked to change Canadian law schools to the Juris Doctor (J.D.) standard. He was also active with Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights. In 2007, Alastair graduated from Queen’s University (Faculty of Law) in Kingston, Ontario and articled at an immigration law boutique on Bay Street in Toronto, Ontario. Alastair was elected student leader and Member of the Executive for the Ontario Bar Association (2007 – 2008) where he was active in professionalism and licensing reforms and consulted with the Law Society of Upper Canada in Toronto on their report. He was very active in preparing students for law school. In 2008, he was Called to the Bar of Ontario. From 2006 until 2012, he served on the Editorial Board of the magazine Briefly Speaking (currently JUST) and penned a regular column, “Behind the Bench”. In 2009, Alastair joined Unison Health and Community Services Legal Aid clinic as Staff Lawyer for the organization and worked with lawyers on effective knowledge management.
