A native of Charleston, Sam graduated from Porter Gaud School and matriculated to the University of South Carolina, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, as a history major and political science minor. He remained at the University of South Carolina for law school, where he received the CALI award for academic excellence in Products Liability and obtained a Juris Doctorate. Dr. Sam Cullan's first degree was from the United States Merchant Marine Academy where he graduated with a major in Marine Engineering and a minor in Nuclear Engineering. After graduating, he ran for public office and was elected to the Nebraska State Senate, at the age of 22. While growing up, I had the pleasure to spend many summers in Florida were I developed an appreciation for boating Florida's waterways. These positive experiences influenced my decision to attend the United States Merchant Marine Academy, a federal service academy. While at the Academy, I had the opportunity to work on container ships, boom ships, and a LASH ship.
