Biography

I have practiced Family Law since graduating law school in 2005. I regularly provide counseling to clients on matters of divorce, equitable distribution, child custody and visitation, spousal and child support and adoptions. As an adoptive parent myself, I understand the blessing of building a family through the grace of adoption and I enjoy assisting families on this journey. I have had the great honor to meet my children's birth families and as a result I feel that I connect to both the adoptive parents as well as the birth parents, all of whom are making a forever family for a child.

Practicing Family Law in a military community comes as a challenge for many attorneys. I have been a military dependent my entire life. My father served in the United States Navy retiring as a Master Chief after 30 years and my husband served as an Infantry Officer in the Army for 26 years retiring as a Colonel. I understand the military lifestyle, culture, benefits, ranks, etc. because I have lived it. When a military member or family member has a family law need, I am prepared to help them move forward because I have the firsthand experience, training and knowledge.

1 Questions Answered
Q. Can my 13 year old step-daughter make the decision not to come visit us?
A: In Virginia, the preference of the child is one of many factors (10) the court considers when making a decision regarding custody and visitation. Further, the child's preference is only considered if it is reasonable and the court deems the child to be of reasonable intelligence, understanding, age and experience to express a preference. Your statement indicates that there is a "custody arrangement." If there is a custody order that allows for visitation, the order should be followed.
