Joi Reed Fairell
DeKalb County Juvenile Court
As a child, my generation's default answer to "What do you want to be when you grow up?" was often a doctor or lawyer. I initially settled on being a doctor, though I had never met one and hated math and blood. By the end of my freshman year at Georgia Southern University, I abandoned pre-med for an undeclared major, unsure of my path. After seeking God’s guidance during my sophomore year, I received a call from a family friend who suggested I become a lawyer—a notion I initially resisted. However, through prayer, I felt a calling to pursue law.
Starting with a simple Google search, I discovered the daunting path to becoming a lawyer. With no resources for Black students on campus, I co-founded the first undergraduate chapter of the Black Law Students Association, traditionally a law school organization. We hosted law school tours, seminars, and prep courses, creating an award-winning model replicated by other schools. Despite the odds, I gained acceptance to my dream school, the University of Georgia School of Law, and graduated at 25, passing the bar exam soon after.
My first job shattered my expectations. The firm's practices—ignoring clients, delaying cases, and poor service—were disheartening. A pivotal moment came when a grandmother, seeking custody of her grandchild, faced devastating delays that jeopardized her case. That heartbreak led me to resign and establish The Fairell Firm in 2011.
Determined to create a firm grounded in excellence, I built a practice based on service, knowledge, quality, and results. We prioritize empathy, client communication, and cutting-edge tools like client portals for case updates. Today, I lead a firm redefining legal standards, providing ethical, efficient, and compassionate representation. I am finally the lawyer I was called to be.
