He tried his first case even before earning his law degree, as permitted under North Carolina law. He is a member of the Mecklenberg County and North Carolina Bar Associations, American Association for Justice, Justice William Bobbitt Inn of Court in Charlotte, and serves on the Belmont Abbey College Alumni Board of Directors. Attorney Smith is the recipient of numerous National Trial Lawyers Association Awards, and was named in 2011 by the North Carolina Weekly as one of the state's Emerging Legal Leaders. He is a certified operator of the device used by law enforcement officers to test blood alcohol content (BAC), and also certified by the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration for DWI detection.
