I've been practicing law in Norfolk, Virginia for 26 years. I originally came to Norfolk to play soccer for Old Dominion on a full scholarship. I then went to the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary where I received my Juris Doctor in 1987. I immediately returned to Norfolk and began working for the Law firm Kellam, Pickrel, Cox & Tayloe. After becoming a partner in my firm and working bankruptcy cases for the next 21 years, I became an expert in my field and decided it was time to manage my own law firm....

My Story I came to Jacksonville in October, 1978, after graduation from Duke University School of Law. My third-year roommate, Bob Parrish, prevailed upon legendary criminal defense and civil rights lawyer Bill Sheppard to grant me an interview and soon I began a clerkship with the firm of Sheppard, Carithers, and Weinbaum. All three partners became lifetime friends and mentors. Hugh Carithers went on to serve with distinction as a Circuit Judge for many years, retiring in December, 2019. Hugo’s passion for immigration law stems from his own family’s immigration experience. His father and mother came to the United States from Peru fleeing political persecution, and as he grew up, Hugo spent many summers in Peru. Hugo uses his experience growing up in an immigrant family and time abroad to understand the conditions where his clients or their employees may have come from and the challenges they face when they come to the United States. He uses this understanding to provide better service to his clients.
