Prior to becoming an attorney, David worked for Verizon as a lineman in Brooklyn, NY for fifteen years: 1995 to 2010. While continuing to work full-time as a lineman, David attended Brooklyn Law School. Upon graduation in 2010, David relocated to Peoria, IL working at a small firm for four years. In 2014, David, his wife, Mary "Molly" Baker, a physician at Pawleys Island Pediatrics and Adult Medicine, and their son, Dominic, relocated to Pawleys Island.

After graduating law school, Ryan Vantrease began his career as an Assistant County Attorney for the Jefferson County Attorney's Office where he specialized in the prosecution of DUI and DUI related offenses. During his tenure with the County Attorney's Office, Ryan litigated all aspects of misdemeanor cases and conducted numerous trials by jury in Jefferson District Court. Ryan took this litigation experience with him when, in 2003, he became an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney in Jefferson County. Ryan Couzens brings a unique perspective, having spent sixteen years with the Yolo County District Attorney’s Office.
