- Her practice includes representation of clients in criminal litigation, enforcement actions, and federal and state grand jury investigations involving health care fraud, securities fraud, bank fraud, contract fraud, RICO violations, mail and wire fraud, and export control violations.Prior to joining Ropes Gray, Joan served as an Assistant United States Attorney and Deputy Chief of the Appeals Unit in the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.As a federal prosecutor, she investigated and tried fraud, narcotics, bank robbery, obstruction of justice, labor racketeering, and organized crime cases. Joan has represented numerous clients in matters involving health care, securities, public corruption, corporate fraud and export law, including: defense of a major pharmaceutical company in a wide-ranging criminal investigation into fraudulent marketing and pricing practices; defense of a health care insurer in a high-profile public corruption investigation; representation of a major defense contractor in a grand jury investigation involving the alleged illegal export of military equipment; representation of the United States on appeal in a criminal contempt case; defense of a senior executive in a USAO/SEC accounting fraud investigation; and representation of a technology company before the DOJ Antitrust Division in connection with an alleged bid-rigging conspiracy.
