Biography

An Alabama attorney with over 35 years as a criminal justice practitioner with 17 years of courtroom trial experience. 12 years of international field experience in international Rule of Law (ROL) and Justice Sector development. In 2004, he began serving overseas. In Iraq as a member of US Department of State, and in Afghanistan at the US Embassy, he served as a senior policy adviser, strategic planner, ROL Team Leader, and manager. As a liaison with high level officials in government justice institutions, numerous civil society and professional associations, legal education institutions, and international organizations on justice related matters he developed an ability to deal with all levels of undertakings. Recently, he was the Deputy Chief of Party for the Baghdad-based Iraq Access to Justice Program (IA2J), a civil legal aid assistance project funded by USAID and an International Training Adviser with the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) in Kabul, Afghanistan. His main focus was training lawyers.

He graduated from UAB in 1974 and Cumberland School of Law in 1980. He retired from the US Military in 1997 and practiced law until he went overseas in 2004. Since returning in March 2016, he has practiced criminal law across Alabama with a focus on State and Federal defense. Currently he teaches law at the Birmingham School of Law. He is married with three grown children and seven grandchildren. He lives in Shelby County and is active in Walker Chapel United Methodist Church as Pastor.
