- Carl earned undergraduate degrees in chemistry and economics from Carnegie Mellon University where he conducted research on palladium catalyzed coupling reactions in the labs of Professor Stuart W. Staley. Carl received his doctorate in chemistry from Harvard University where he synthesized the complex natural product Longithorone A and developed ring closing ene-yne metathesis macrocyclization methodology under the guidance of Professor Matthew D. Shair. During his academic career, Carl taught numerous undergraduate and graduate level chemistry and economics courses. He has also authored papers in peer-reviewed journals and publicly presented his research on several occasions. Carl is the recipient of an NSF Pre-doctoral Fellowship, a Roche Fellowship, a GEM Graduate Fellowship, The Christiensen Prize, and numerous teaching awards.
