- Before returning to Ropes Gray, Peter served for six years as Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary of the J. Paul Getty Trust. The Getty has a $5.7 billion endowment, a $250 million budget and 1,600 employees, and operates two campuses in Los Angeles and an extensive series of worldwide programs through the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Getty Conservation Institute and the Getty Foundation. Peter previously served for four years as Vice President and General Counsel of the University of Pennsylvania, where he served as chief legal officer of both the University and its four-hospital health system. Peter left Ropes Gray in 1993 to serve as a deputy assistant attorney general in the United States Department of Justice. In 1996-97, he was an Associate Counsel to the President of the United States, working in the White House Counsel's office. During his earlier tenure at Ropes Gray, Peter was a corporate transactional and securities lawyer. He originally became a partner in 1990.
