Kevin Courtney boasted a wealth of legal knowledge even when first starting out as a defense counselor. His legal knowledge multiplied by leaps and bounds, so that when our careers diverged, he was one of the most knowledgeable and capable defense counselors in our defense shop.

Kevin Courtney would not simply accept facts or issues on their face and would go the extra mile to research these facts and issues until all the different angles of the fact or issue were expressed. He would dig deep into case law and find unique and original arguments to apply to his cases for the benefit of his client.

Kevin Courtney routinely practiced in front of judges, member panels and administrative boards, and in each of those settings he was able to clearly and confidently express the best arguments that benefited his client.

For example, in a complex sexual assault trial he took the lead in the areas of DNA, forensic pathology, and forensic psychology. He quickly mastered these subjects and skillfully cross-examined the government's expert witnesses, and presented our own scientific evidence in an understandable way, resulting in an acquittal at trial.

Initially, many of the cases I had with Kevin, I was opposing counsel as I was on the prosecution side, and he was on the defense side. Later, I moved to defense, where Kevin mentored me, and served as co-counsel on numerous cases with me.

Kevin is the definition of a effective and zealous advocate. He is the utmost professional, and he truly cares about his clients and the law. Kevin is very creative in crafting arguments and is quick to understand any particular issue or area of law. I have personally witnessed him win several legal arguments for his clients that at first blush did not seem to have a good chance at success. But, due to his ability to analyze facts and the law, he was able to achieve a good outcome for his clients.
