- As a Board of Regents Graduate Fellow, I characterized Simian Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (SHFV), an RNA virus isolated from the simultaneous outbreak of SHFV and Reston ebolavirus in a primate colony in Reston, Virginia, described in Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone." My research incorporated numerous laboratory techniques, including viral amplification, isolation and purification through sucrose gradient ultracentrifugation, gene sequencing with radioactive P-32, tissue culture, Western blots, PCR, ELISA assays, and viral plaque assays.
