Chicago criminal defense attorney Steven H. Fagan discusses alternative sentencing and deferred prosecution programs in Cook County Court.

The Cook County criminal court system, which includes Chicago, Illinois and surrounding suburbs, is the country's largest unified county court system. It's where misdemeanor and felony criminal matters are heard when charged at the State or Municipal level.

People are usually surprised to hear that Cook County is also home to the widest array of alternative dispositions and deferred prosecution programs in any single court system around the country. That includes many criminal defense lawyers too.

Alternative dispositions or deferred prosecution can have a big impact on the ultimate outcome of your case. In cases where probation is not available by law, some alternative plans can chance that and keep you out of prison. In some cases, the ultimate dismissal of the charges may be possible. Where imprisonment is mandatory, the length and nature of the imprisonment can be changed dramatically.

Some of these programs are at the sole discretion of the prosecution. Some require the Court's approval. In all cases, the interest of the Court is the vastly increased likelihood the Defendant will not reoffend. Many of our clients that have engaged in these programs have called it a life-changing experience.

Criminal offenses which may be eligible might include Possession of a Controlled Substance, prostitution, Possession of Cannabis, Retail Theft, Theft of Services and many other felony and misdemeanor charges common in Chicago criminal court. Chicago area Criminal defense attorney Steven H. Fagan explains what to wear to your court appearance date in Illinois, and why it's important.
Dressing in at least semi-casual attire demonstrates to the Court that you have respect for them, and makes it much more likely you'll be treated with respect as well. This is true whether you are appearing for a minor traffic violation, or for a felony or misdemeanor. If the Court has any influence over your life and freedom, put your best foot forward. While a suit and tie is nice, even semi-casual business wear is acceptable.
