Biography

Reid is a dedicated legal professional with a unique journey in the realm of criminal justice. Born and raised in the city of Scottsdale, Arizona, he kick-started his academic journey by earning a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Arizona State University.

Venturing further into the world of law, Reid relocated to Denver, Colorado, where he pursued his passion for legal expertise at the University of Denver. It was during his time in law school that he began to refine his trial advocacy skills, a journey that led him to become a distinguished member of the National Trial Team.

While in law school, he developed his passion for defending DUI/DWAI cases with The Orr Law Firm and DUIDLA. Ever since, he has maintained the most modern strategies of attack and defending a client accused with DUI/DWAI. Mr. DeChant recognizes that a DUI can be daunting and life changing. No matter your background, you may find yourself face to face with an impaired driving accusation and Mr. DeChant strives to help you navigate through the administrative DMV process and the criminal court process.

Mr. DeChant’s commitment to client-focused representation and trial advocacy continued to grow during his tenure at the Colorado Public Defender’s Office, where he passionately defended the rights of the accused. He firmly believes in taking any case to trial when a favorable resolution seems unattainable, and his dedication extends to regularly attending trial advocacy trainings across the nation to ensure he possesses the most effective tools for his clients.

In 2022, he attended Trial Lawyers College where he developed research based strategies on persuasive story telling. Having this tool is priceless in his negotiations with prosecutors, requesting reasonable sentences with judges and convincing jurors that his client is innocent. Mr. DeChant regularly teaches other Colorado attorneys the latest on defending impaired driving and DMV related consequences.

Q. I have video footage that incriminates me. The prosecutor doesn't have it. Do I give it to my defense attorney
A: If you are charged with assault and the video shows you just walked towards the accuser and did not assault him, it sure sounds like that video could help prove your case for you. Either way, good or bad, your attorney does not have to provide that information to the prosecutor. Everything you tell your attorney is confidential and the attorney is prohibited from sharing that information unless there is an exception, like if you are threatening to hurt someone or have someone tied up in your basement, as an extreme example. I have lots of clients admit to being guilty but I still go into court and argue the evidence doesn't support a conviction.
Q. I have a case in for robbery and menacing. I also have mental issues and at the time of the incident I breakdown
A: I would suggest hiring a private attorney (you can use the attorney search function on this website or on Google) or applying for a public defender. From the little bit you have shared, having a mental breakdown doesn't allow you to commit crimes. However, it certainly can be used as mitigation when negotiating a plea agreement for your case. You could get into treatment, show the DA your treatment along with an explanation about what was going on and convince them this was a one time thing that would never happen again. These are all things an attorney can and should help you with. Robbery is a very serious charge you should not try to navigate alone or with the assistance of random attorneys online. ... Read More
Q. When Denver took over my Douglas County case that was to run concurrent with Denver, shouldn't it (Douglas County) have
A: There are a couple possibly explanations as to how you got into this situation. First, I'd recommend hiring an attorney to help navigate your situation because they should be able to help get you out of this situation better than trying to navigate it yourself.

First, it is possible that Douglas never received any communication from Denver and that you didn't follow up to make sure the two counties were in touch. I often see where a client is sentenced to probation in Denver and also probation in Douglas and it is on you to make sure they communicate about what you are doing. You cannot just do probation in Denver and expect Douglas to figure it out.

Second, let's assume you did the work up front and they were in touch. It is possible your Douglas probation was longer or had other terms you did not complete. So while you completed Denver's terms, you didn't complete Douglas' terms.

Again, an attorney will be able to look at both cases, the probation complaint and help figure out the best outcome for you. This forum has the ability to attorney search for attorneys.
