Mark Scherzer
Mark Scherzer Law - Life, Health and Disability Insurance Lawyer
Mark Scherzer has advocated on behalf of consumers, policyholders, and employees to secure their rights to health, life and disability insurance benefits for nearly 30 years. He has served as Legislative Counsel to New Yorkers for Accessible Health Coverage, a coalition of voluntary health organizations advocating for insurance reform at the state level, for over 15 years. In that capacity, he advocated for passage of the 1992 Community Rating Law, the 1995 Point of Service Law, and other legislation protecting consumer rights, including legislation regarding rare disease coverage and dependent health insurance coverage passed and signed into law 2009. He has served on several public commissions to develop or implement insurance reforms in New York and has written and spoken widely about access to insurance coverage and benefits.
In 1992 Mr. Scherzer was awarded Lambda Legal Defense's Liberty Award for his work on groundbreaking insurance cases involving HIV/AIDS, and in 1994 POZ Magazine named him one of the 50 most influential AIDS policymakers in the country. He is a member of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Insurance Task Force, has served as a mentor and trainer in the Cancer Advocacy Project of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York, Robert B. McKay Community Outreach Law Program, and as co-chair of the Consumer and Patient Rights Committee of the Health Law Section of the New York State Bar Association.
