I'm an attorney licensed in North Carolina and Florida practicing estate planning, estate administration, guardianship, small business, and tax law. Being openly gay, I have a particular affinity for serving same-gender/same-sex couples, alternative families, and LGBTQ individuals. Regardless of your situation, I look forward to helping you develop an estate plan to protect yourself and your loved ones. I serve on the Board of Directors of the Guilford Green Foundation (ggfnc.org) and the Greensboro Chapter of the Society of Financial Service Professionals. Though born in Japan, I am a native North Carolinian, having grown up in Rockingham. I completed a double-major in Business and French at UNC Greensboro. I graduated cum laude from Elon University School of Law and went on to earn an LL.M. (Master of Laws) in Taxation from the University of Florida. While at Elon Law, I practiced estate planning in the Wills Clinic and externed for Judge Sue Burch. I founded and served as President and Treasurer of OutLaw, a social and educational organization for LGBTQ law students at Elon. I was an admissions ambassador, treasurer of Delta Theta Phi law fraternity and Elon Law Democrats, solicitor (investigator and prosecutor) for the Honor Council, and a member of the Jewish Law Students Association. During summers away from Elon Law, I interned for the District Attorney in Rockingham and the Public Defender in Charlotte, as well as studied Chinese business law in Beijing and Spanish language and culture in Madrid. I was also an active member of OutLaw at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Estate administration comprises about half of my practice and includes the probate process, but also trust administration, claiming benefits from life insurance and retirement plans, and complying with tax responsibilities (completing estate tax and fiduciary income tax returns). About a quarter of my practice is estate planning, where I meet with clients to become acquainted with them, their goals, and their family structures, and then craft a suite of documents, often highly customized, to help carry out those goals. The rest of my practice includes a variety related to the above two major areas, including tax law, small business law, guardianships, and beneficiary representation. I often work closely with professionals in allied fields, including financial planning, accounting, and insurance. I enjoy giving seminars and doing pro bono work to educate the public on estate planning and to ensure that the most vulnerable among us have at least basic protection.
