Biography

Barry was born and reared in Urbana, Ohio, where his father was an independent businessman and his mother the secretary to the president of a large corporation; entrepreneurship is in his blood. In his 38 years of law practice, he has handled the purchase and sale of businesses ranging from as simple and small as the corner bar to as complex and large as a regional supermarket chain. Barry graduated from Otterbein College in 1967 and went on to Georgetown University Law Center where he obtained his law degree in 1970. During law school, he worked as an administrative and legislative aide in the Congressional office of Clarence J. Brown, Jr. Following service in the U.S. Air Force, he joined Cole, Cole & Harmon, and has remained with this firm as it evolved to Cole Acton Harmon Dunn. Over the years, Barry’s practice has changed as circumstances in the community and the firm have changed. Currently he works principally on commercial and business matters for clients in both the profit and nonprofit sectors, earning a reputation for the successful negotiation and completion of the purchase and sale of businesses. Barry also handles real estate, probate and estate planning matters, knowing well how those issues dovetail with the concerns of business owners. As Barry says, “After practicing 38 years, very little surprises me any more, but I am still excited about the legal challenges that come into my office on a daily basis.” Barry has lived at various times in Champaign, Clark, and Greene Counties and is intimately familiar with the economies of all three. He currently resides with his wife Jennifer in Yellow Springs, a small village where everything is within walking distance. Barry and Jennifer particularly enjoy the company of their six children (who are scattered from coast to coast), reading, playing Scrabble, traveling, and cooking.
