Growing up in Seattle's Rainier Valley in the 1950's, I learned as a child that people worked hard to make a living. My mother's favorite saying was by William Penn, "I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again."My parents taught me and my siblings the meaning of the saying "An honest day's work for an honest day's pay," and they lived by those principles. So did I - I began working in the summers at the local steel mill at the age of 13.

Growing up, two of my heroes were Dr. William Hutchinson and coach Frank Ahern. Dr. Hutchinson, who later built the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in honor of his brother, performed surgery on me when I was 4 years old. The surgery took more than 5 hours and resulted in a bill of $50! Coach Frank Ahern spent hundreds of hours teaching me to believe in myself and my abilities. Both men, along with my parents, were instrumental in showing me the value of helping others, and leading me to a career in law.

I believe that each day I have the opportunity to do the best I can do. This is the reason I get out of bed in the morning. Every day, my life as a lawyer offers me the opportunity to make a contribution to some person or some ideal. Often, the person I am attempting to help is unable to help himself; the ideal is often one that would otherwise be disregarded.

Whether I am waiting for a jury to return with a positive verdict or negotiating a settlement that will allow an injured client to pay for medical bills, my work as an attorney is personally fulfilling. I am motivated by ensuring that justice is achieved for every person that I represent.

CPT Bruce Davis was born in Bellevue and raised in Seattle and Burien, WA. He enlisted in the United States Navy in April 1986 as a Seaman Recruit (E-1). While in the Navy, Davis served on board USS McKee (AS 41), USS Tisdale (FFG 27) and as a Midshipman Candidate at the Naval Academy Preparatory School. He left active duty in 1989 as a Seaman (E-3).

In 1990, Davis joined the WAARNG as a Private First Class (E-3). Davis served with 1-803d AR (Separate) and elements of the 81st AR BDE as an M60 and M1 tank crewman (19E and 19K MOS). While serving in the 81st, he transferred to infantry as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle crewman (11M MOS). Davis left the National Guard on his ETS date in 1999 as a Specialist (E-4).

Between 1996 and 2004, Davis returned to school, finishing his BA in Political Science at the University of Washington, his Master of Public Administration at Seattle University, and his JD at the College of William & Mary in Virginia.

After taking the Washington State bar exam, but before learning the results of the test, Davis joined the Navy Reserve as a Petty Officer Third Class (E-4), rated Yeoman. Still waiting for bar results, Davis was ordered to active duty and deployed on board USS Rodney M. Davis in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. While underway in the Pacific, Davis learned he had passed the bar exam, and upon his return from deployment in 2005, Davis was sworn as a member of the Washington State Bar.

In 2005, while serving as a Navy Reservist, Davis traveled to Beijing, China to accept a job as an attorney advisor in a Chinese corporate and commercial law firm. There he met and married his wife, Moyan. Davis returned to the United States in 2007 and was selected for advancement to Petty Officer First Class (E-6) before leaving the Navy Reserve for commissioning in the Army JAG Corps.

Davis was commissioned in January 2008. He attended the 175th JAOBC and finished on the Commandant's list, completing DCO and BOLC at Fort Sill, OK. Davis immediately volunteered to transfer from his job as Command Trial Counsel, 66th TAC, Fort Lewis, to the deploying 81st HBCT, and was ordered to active duty as a Legal Assistance Attorney to support the brigade's preparation for mobilization.

In August 2008 Davis deployed with the 81st Brigade as Brigade Trial Counsel. After training at Fort McCoy, WI, Davis was sent to Joint Base Balad (LSA Anaconda), Iraq. There he worked in the Balad CLC as Trial Counsel for 3d ESC and Brigade Trial Counsel for the 304th SB, while continuing to serve remotely as Brigade Trial Counsel for the 81st HBCT at Camp Ramadi.

After returning from Iraq Captain Davis was retained on active duty to complete 81st Brigade legal actions relating to the deployment. In December 2009 he was again mobilized and ordered to 1st AD Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany. In Wiesbaden Captain Davis was assigned to the Client Services office as a Legal Assistance Attorney and currently serves as Chief of Legal Assistance.

Captain Davis is married to Ms Moyan Wang, an international business consultant from Beijing. They make their permanent home in Washington State.
