Mr. Sumner has been practicing law since 2000. He started his career with Rosenthal & Greene, PC, a highly respected plaintiffs firm. He worked on high profile civil rights cases, legal and medical malpractice cases, and large personal injury claims. He appeared in a variety of Oregon trial courts, the U.S. District Court for the District of Oregon, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

He moved to Abbott & Prange/Paris, PC, an insurance defense firm after about 4 years. He defended insured from a wide variety of claims including accounting malpractice, mental health professional malpractice, premises liability, automobile claims, herbicide application issues, and defending accountants against ethics allegations. The case exposure ranged from minor automobile claims to death cases. He also obtained his license in Washington in 2005. He appeared in a variety of Oregon and Washington trial courts, the Oregon Court of Appeals, the Oregon Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court for the Districts of Oregon and the Western District of Washington, and before administrative law judges for the Board of Accountancy.

Mr. Sumner then joined Scheer & Zehnder and opened their Oregon office. His practice there focused on construction defect claims, primarily on behalf of the general contractor in large construction projects. He appeared in a variety of trial courts in Oregon and Washington and the Oregon Court of Appeals.

After opening the Scheer & Zehnder Oregon office, he joined The Rickles Law Firm. While there, he defended automobile dealers from a variety of claims including employment cases and premises liability claims. He also worked on construction defect claims and did some debt collection.

Sumner Law, PC, opened April 15, where Mr. Sumner utilizes his wide experience to represent clients in a variety of claims from bringing and defending personal injury claims to business litigation.

Prior to becoming a lawyer, Mr. Sumner served in the United State Coast Guard. That experience gave him expertise in maritime issues and the nautical rules of the road. A growing area of his practice is in the maritime community, primarily as an expert witness in boating collisions.

Though I was born in Spokane, Washington and presently reside in Clark County, Washington, I have spent a good portion of my life residing in the Portland-metropolitan area. As a result, one of my objectives as a lawyer has always been to represent people in both Oregon & Washington.

I enrolled at Gonzaga University School of Law in 1996. That summer following my first year at Gonzaga, I was elected as an associate editor for the Gonzaga Law Review. and was also hired as a legal intern for Columbia Legal Services. This is where my exposure and love for family law began. As a Rule 9 intern for Columbia Legal Services, I counseled and represented clients in the areas of divorce, custody, vidsitation, child / spousal support, and domestic violence. My article entitled, "Providing Equal Justice for the Domestic Violence Victim: Due Process and the Victim's Right to Counsel" would later be published in the Gonzaga Law Review. In 1999, I graduated from law school in the top 1/3 of my class and passed the Washington State Bar Exam. I subsequently passed the Oregon State Bar exam in 2004.

Following law school, I was an associate attorney for three years in a prominent, AV-rated law firm in Longview, Washington. There too my practice focused on family law. While practicing law in Longview, I was active in the legal community serving as a board member for the Cowlitz County CASA, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum County Legal Aid Program, and served as the vice president/president-elect for the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum County Bar Association.

I am an active family law practitioner in Clark County, Washington as well as Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Columbia County, Oregon. I have represented clients and appeared in court on behalf of clients in other counties in both states. Prior to establishing my own firm, I practiced law in Portland for four years and represented both Oregon and Washington clients in high-asset divorce cases and other family law matters while employed by a Portland family law firm. In 2008, I co-founded Martin & Veley, P.C., with offices in downtown Portland, Oregon and Camas, Washington. My practice concentrates on civil litigation, legal advice, and disputes relating to real estate, construction, contracts, businesses, and individuals, including construction contract drafting, review and advice; representation of contractors and owners regarding construction defects and other disputes relating to the construction industry; construction lien preparation and foreclosure; commercial contract disputes and breach of contract actions; debt collections, including lawsuits, garnishments and property seizures; judgment liens; mortgage and deed of trust real estate foreclosures; adverse possession, boundary line, fence line and other neighbor disputes; express and implied easements; matters involving restrictive covenants and height restrictions; nuisances; representation of home owners associations and enforcement of the HOA's Conditions, Covenants & Restrictions (CCRs); and other disputes and legal issues between individuals, businesses, neighbors, property owners, construction contractors, and/or material suppliers. Shareholder Lisa E. Martin's practice focuses on all aspects of family law, including divorce, separation, child custody, paternity, child and spousal support, parenting plans, visitation, and domestic violence.

When not practicing law, I enjoy spending time with my wife and four year old daughter, our Boston Terrier Ruby Sue, and friends. I enjoy spending time outdoors in the great pacific northwest outdoors, whitewater rafting, skiing, hiking, and golfing, along with playing poker indoors when it rains.
