Traveling With Your Dog (Information provided by Justia)

When novelist John Steinbeck set off to drive through America in 1960, his only companion was a big poodle named Charley. "He is a good friend and traveling companion, and would rather travel about than anything he can imagine," Steinbeck wrote in Travels With Charley. "A dog, particularly an exotic like Charley, is a bond between strangers. Many conversations en route began with 'What degree of a dog is that?'"

Today's travelers, if they want to take their dogs with them, are probably still best off to imitate Steinbeck and take to the highways. More modern modes of transportation, such as commercial jets, are best avoided.
