Harrison A. Lord is an attorney with the law firm of James, McElroy & Diehl. His practice focuses on all aspects of litigation, particularly trial work. Before joining James, McElroy & Diehl, Harrison served a two-year clerkship to the Honorable Richard A. Elmore of the North Carolina Court of Appeals. He is active in the North Carolina Bar Association, in which he was a member of the Charter Class of the North Carolina Bar Association Leadership Academy and the recipient of the 2010-2011 Charles F. Blanchard Outstanding Young Lawyer Award. Harrison currently serves as a member of the Strategic Planning and Emerging Trends Committee of the Bar Association and as a Division Director of the Young Lawyers Division.

Harrison grew up in Harnett County, North Carolina, before attending high school at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham. He received his A.B. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he double majored in Classics and History. While in college, Harrison twice earned the Monogram Award as a member of the varsity fencing team, and was listed three times on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Harrison attended Washington University School of Law, where he received a Scholars in Law merit based scholarship and served as Associate Editor for the Washington University Journal of Law and Policy. At graduation, Harrison was awarded the Judge John W. Calhoun Trial Practice Award in recognition of his talent for and dedication to trial work.

• I have successfully argued in North Carolina Mecklenburg District Court that a plaintiff who has threatened their undocumented spouse with "telling the immigration authorities" about their status is evidence of domestic violence. This was the first case in the United States to rule on this point.

• I have adjusted the status for an applicant who was denied a green card because he once lied about his social security number. The applicant was granted a green card and today is a taxpaying resident.

• I have obtained legal status and work permits for a child who was a victim of human trafficking.

• I have obtained freedom for a legal permanent resident who was picked up by Immigration and Custom Enforcement (ICE) raid without lawful justification.

• I have helped clients avoid deportation/removal marks against their records.

• I have helped clients obtain U.S. Citizenship.

• I helped a client obtain his green card after being denied by USCIS because he was brought to the United States when he was young child by his parents who were undocumented at the time.

• I have helped clients adjust their German E Treaty employment status to obtain a green card for themselves and their family.

Philosophy

What is your opinion regarding clients educating themselves on legal issues?

While education about legal issues is helpful, clients should not assume that this gives them the training to appear before courts or argue legal issues, let alone navigate, the complex landscape of United States Immigration authorities.

Are you willing to review documents prepared by clients?
I will only review documents pursuant to a consultation or documents required as evidence to help a client who has retained our firm. I do not review documents prepared by clients who seek to present such documents to U.S. Immigration authorities in a pro se context.

Are you willing to coach clients who want to represent themselves?

This is not a policy of our firm.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

To promote fairness and justice by testing charges and evidence presented by the government against an individual. In the immigration arena being the son of Greek Immigrant parents instilled the empathy and respect I have for the positive contributions that immigrants have and continue to make to our society.

What work experience and education helps you be a better lawyer?

Having lived in many countries, having received my education in Europe, and having represented hundreds of clients in criminal and family court in the United States, has given me the experience to represent immigration clients. I have had outstanding results for virtually all of my immigration clients.

Why did you decide on your primary area of practice?

Immigrants represent one of the best assets for our society, and unlike most other countries in the world, the United States has one of the best track records for accepting and assimilating new immigrants. Our system is not perfect, but compared to what I have witnessed in other countries, the United States still provides a relatively superior option for new immigrants who are willing to work and contribute to our society. Having said this, our system is not perfect, and I believe that through education in our schools, government and the media, more people will come to understand the tremendous contributions that new immigrants can and do make to our society.

Helping clients achieve freedom and realize their potential through devoted and zealous advocacy on behalf of their legal rights.

As a solo attorney, all of my client's will work directly with me. I also have experienced legal staff with over 25 years of litigation and research skills. My team of assistants also speak Spanish and German.

Ann graduated with honors and received a degree in engineering arts from Michigan State University. In 1994, she graduated cum laude from Tulane University School of Law where she was elected to the Order of the Coif. During law school, she was an editor on the Tulane Environmental Law Journal and was a Public Interest Law Foundation grant recipient. Ann worked first with the North Carolina Center for Death Penalty Litigation and then with the Cumberland County Public Defender's Office until she opened her own practice in Fayetteville in 1998. She joined the firm's Raleigh office in April, 2000, established a Charlotte office in 2007, and handles cases throughout the state. Today, Ann litigates serious personal injury cases with a special interest in representing victims of bicycle crashes. She also represents individuals seriously injured in car accidents and by negligent property owners and those involved in employment or contractual disputes.

Ann is active with the North Carolina Advocates for Justice (NCAJ), where she serves on the Board of Governors. She has taught as a faculty member of NCAJ's Capital College and several National Institute for Trial Advocacy programs and coached a high school mock trial team from 2002-2006. Ann has prepared amicus briefs on behalf of the North Carolina ACLU and NCAJ. She is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, the American Association for Justice, the league of American Bicyclists and Charlotte Area Bicycle Association.

Along with Peter Wilborn, Ann is also part of mybikelaw, which is dedicated to promoting and protecting the rights of cyclists in the Carolinas, and beyond. Ann and Peter are advocates for bicycle safety, and stand up for cyclists' rights on the roads and in court.

"Laurie" Baker is a native Texan who found herself in North Carolina in 2004 to attend law school. Laurie is member of the 2002 graduating class of Emory University where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, with a minor in Sociology. Laurie attended law school at Campbell University's Norman Adrian Wiggins School of Law and graduated in 2007. While in law school, Laurie quickly took a leadership role, by being elected as a student representative in the Student Bar Association, a Justice on the Honor Court, and Dean ("president") of the Delta Theta Phi Chapter at Campbell. In addition to excelling in leadership, Laurie also displayed early promise as a litigator while in law school. Laurie, like Luke, was invited in her second year of law school to be a member of one of Campbell's mock trial teams, an honor typically reserved exclusively for third year law students. Upon graduation, Laurie was inducted into the prestigious Order of Barristers for her service to her alma mater and her having displayed excellence in the art of trial advocacy. While in law school Laurie also was asked to join one of Campbell's moot court teams and represented the school at the regional competition. Laurie was also an active member of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity as well as being Dean for 2 years. Professional: Prior to pursuing a career in law and after finishing her undergraduate degree, Laurie obtained her paralegal certificate from the University of North Texas and worked for 1 year as a legal project assistant at Fulbright & Jaworski, LLP in Austin, Texas. Following law school and after being licensed as an attorney, Laurie proudly served as an associate attorney at the law offices of Hartsell & Williams, P.A. in Concord, North Carolina where her skills as a trial lawyer and litigator were honed and finely tuned. Laurie left that practice amicably to join Luke at The Baker Law Firm, P.A. in July 2009. Memberships: Laurie is member/licensee of the North Carolina State Bar and Judicial District 19A Bar. She is also an active member of the North Carolina Bar Association, North Carolina Advocates for Justice (formerly North Carolina Academy of Trial Lawyers), American Bar Association, and American Association for Justice (formerly American Trial Lawyers Association). Community: Laurie is an active citizen in the Cabarrus County and Concord community. She is a member of the Cabarrus Rotary Club, a member of the Junior Charity League of Concord, and attends the First Presbyterian Church of Concord. Family: Laurie was recently married to Luke Baker in November of 2008. Laurie and Luke met in law school and were members of the same law fraternity.
