Alan was a certified and registered baseball umpire, a basketball official and football official for more than three decades. He began officiating with the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) in 1968, while attending Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His officiating continued in New Jersey while he attended Rutgers University School of Law in Camden. He continued to officiate all three sports for many years thereafter.
