Jared Altman has nearly three decades of experience in the legal field. While still in law school he worked in the District Attorney's Office assisting with the prosecution of matters such as driving while intoxicated or impaired, assault and larceny. He also represented disabled persons seeking Social Security Disability benefits. Upon graduating Hofstra University Law School with distinction in 1981, he entered the litigation field with positions at law firms emphasizing personal injury and commercial litigation. There he was exposed to cases involving automobiles, buses, subways, false arrest, infantÃ¢s claims, burns and animal bites, to name a few. He was then recruited by what was then the worldÃ¢s oldest and largest insurance company to defend the companyÃ¢s insureds in various kinds of lawsuits, from falls and auto accidents through complex elevator and construction accident cases, including appellate work. He also represented the company itself in numerous lawsuits in both State and Federal courts, including the prosecution of subrogation claims, defending arbitrations and in declaratory judgment actions to determine insurance coverage. He rose through the ranks to become the Senior New York City Trial Attorney assigned primarily to the Manhattan Supreme Court.

Mr. Altman was then invited to join the litigation department of one of New YorkÃ¢s preeminent real estate firms, whose practice focused on condominium and cooperative law. Mr. Altman handled complex real estate lawsuits and helped found the firmÃ¢s personal injury practice. While there he worked on all kinds of litigation, including personal injury and accident cases, medical malpractice actions, shareholderÃ¢s derivative lawsuits, commercial and residential landlord and tenant proceedings, regulatory hearings and more. Mr. Altman also handled residential and commercial real estate closings and such diverse matters as commercial leasing and tax certiorari (fighting real estate tax increases for apartment buildings and complexes). Mr. Altman even got involved in legal matters in such far flung places as England, Puerto Rico, California, Virginia and Florida. Mr. Altman further assisted one of the senior partners, a renowned criminal defense attorney, with the defense of various criminal prosecutions such as rape, conspiracy and grand larceny. He also handled estate planning and administration. He ultimately ascended to lead the litigation department as Senior Litigation Partner.

In 1996, Mr. Altman began relocating his practice to the greater Hudson Valley while remaining active in New York City. By 1999, Mr. Altman had moved his office to Peekskill and had shifted his practice from primarily New York City centered to focus more on Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland and Orange Counties, although he still handles matters in all five boroughs of New York City and in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Mr. Altman also has colleagues that handle out-of-state matters for him in places such as Connecticut, New Jersey, Florida, California and Puerto Rico.

Mr. Altman's practice is now quite diverse and draws upon the wide expanse of experience he has gained over the years. He handles all kinds of personal injury cases, such as auto accidents and falls, medical and other professional malpractice, wrongful death, all kinds of real estate deals and real estate litigation such as closings and landlord and tenant proceedings, criminal law, including DWI, and wills, trusts and estates. Mr. Altman also qualified to and serves on the panel of criminal defense attorneys available for assignment to defendants who cannot afford their own attorney.

Cari then transferred to Texas A & M University where received her Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science and was a member of both the Livestock and Meat Animal Evaluation (“Askarben”) judging teams and actively involved with Saddle and Sirloin and Texas Aggie Cattlewomen. At Texas A & M University, Cari was selected to participate in the Congressional Agriculture and Natural Resource Policy Internship Program through the College of Agriculture. It is here that Cari received her first glimpse into agriculture law and policy during her summer working for Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX).

After Texas A & M, Cari came back home to the University of Illinois to complete her Masters of Science in Ruminant Nutrition where her concentration was in beef feedlot nutrition. Cari completed two research projects in the areas of distillers grain and genetic markers for marbling which each led to published works. During this time, Cari was a research and teaching assistant for Dr. Larry Berger, coached the Shelby County 4-H Livestock Judging Team, and completed an internship with the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in Washington, D.C.

Due to her passion for law and policy, Cari decided to complete her Juris Doctor from Pace University, School of Law, in White Plains, New York. At Pace, Cari completed certificates in both Environmental Law and International Law and was a Vice-Chair on the National Environmental Moot Court Competition Board. While in law school, Cari worked at SimmonsCooper, LLC in their international litigation division and completed a consultantcy with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations where she conducted research on national legal frameworks on the conservation of livestock biodiversity and was a contributing author to "The State of the World's Animal Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture."

Furthermore, while at Pace, Cari participated in Yale University’s School of Forestry’s Environmental Diplomacy program where she worked as an advisor for the Permanent Mission of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the United Nations, sat the floor of the General Assembly and gave policy recommendations to Ambassador Capelle. In addition to these experiences, Cari interned with Homelessness Prevention Unit for the Los Angeles Public Counsel, the largest pro bono clinic in the world.

Cari continues to have her boots planted firmly in agriculture and enjoys judging livestock shows and taking pictures of the livestock industry and rural life. She is the owner of Rincker Cattle Co., a SimAngus operation in Shelbyville Illinois, and is on the leadership board for National Cattlemen’s Beef Association’s Young Producers' Council. Cari also enjoys international travel, distance running, playing volleyball, watching both Illini basketball and Aggie football, and sitting in the cheapseats for baseball games. Community service remains a high priority for Cari as she serves the New York metropolitan area through her church and non-profit organizations.

I started Legal Research & Writing Pro to help other lawyers improve their legal writing skills, and to teach lawyers how to start and run successful legal research and writing practices.

Studies and surveys show that career satisfaction among lawyers is at an all-time low. Chief among the reasons for a lack of satisfaction is the inability of many lawyers to achieve a balance between the demands of their careers and their personal lives. I believe your law degree shouldn’t be a trap: it should be a liberating, empowering force.

Technology and the outsourcing revolution have joined forces to make this the best time in history to establish a legal research and writing practice.

I’ve been in the field of outsourced legal research and writing since its infancy. When I started my practice twelve years ago, a lot of lawyers didn’t even use e-mail: I had to drag some of my clients, kicking and screaming, into the internet age. Although I could do legal research online, my dial-up connection was painfully slow. But the most difficult challenge to overcome was lawyers’ unfamiliarity with the idea of outsourcing research and writing work to a contract attorney.

Today, all that has changed. E-mail use is well-nigh universal among lawyers. High-speed internet connections make online legal research a breeze. And, most importantly, lawyers are becoming more comfortable with the idea of using contract attorneys to perform discrete tasks, whether the task is making a court appearance, defending a deposition, or researching and writing a brief.

For years, lawyers across the country have called and e-mailed me asking for advice on how to start and run a legal research and writing practice. I’m pleased that I’ve been able to help so many lawyers get their start in this practice area. But I realized that I could help so many more people in a much more comprehensive way if I compiled everything I have learned over the past twelve years and made it widely available.

I can understand if you’re a little leery: after all, why should I share what I’ve learned with thousands of potential competitors? The answer is simple: I think there is amazing pent-up demand for high-quality outsourced legal research and writing services.

As a solo practitioner, I need only a handful of good clients to support my practice. According to the American Bar Association, as of December 31, 2005, there were over 1.1 million practicing lawyers in the United States. In a 2000 statistical survey, the American Bar Foundation found that 36% of lawyers were solo practitioners and 38% worked in small firms. Small firms and solos are the most likely potential clients for a legal research and writing practitioner. As these lawyers search for their own work/life balance, they’ll be more and more interested in outsourcing their excess workload to specially-trained legal research and writing providers.

At the same time, based on my research, there currently are very few lawyers out there who actively promote themselves as dedicated legal research and writing service providers. In fact, I have located fewer than 100 lawyers in the United States whose web sites indicate that they perform legal research and writing services of any sort on a contract basis. (Of course, it’s likely that many more lawyers take on contract work, including legal research and writing projects, but do not advertise that fact.

All this talk of work/life balance and professional satisfaction might sound very “pie-in-the-sky”—even utopian—to most of us, almost too good to be true. You suspect that this kind of work must pay a pittance. But you really can have it all: a challenging career, the flexibility to enjoy personal and family time and a comfortable living.

I became an attorney after many years on Wall Street because I like helping underdogs, including abuse victims, the elderly, the physically and/or mentally challenged, discrimination victims, animals, foreclosure victims, etc. I am a different type of lawyer than some people are used to, especially since I used to be on the other side of the desk. I also check with attorneys with decades of experience just to make sure I am handling my clients' cases properly. I am an active member of the Suffolk County Bar Association, and I take a great deal of Continuing Education courses ("CLE"). Even though only 16 credits are required, I had 80 in 2010 and have yet to count the many from 2011. I want to ensure that I am always up on the latest developments so besides the CLE courses, I have updating services. I also keep regular friendships and contact with other lawyers in the area and we help one another out, and I do pro bono work through pro bono organizations. Again, this helps my clients out.

I have repeat clients because of the way I treat clients from the start. Once clients see the Ryder difference, they have high expectations and I work hard to meet those expectations. Steven Schiesel, a founding partner of Pecoraro & Schiesel, was born in New York City in 1960. He received a B.A., cum laude, from Columbia University in New York, a J.D. from Fordham Law School,and an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy from Temple Law School. While a student at Columbia University, he was elected to the Psi Chi National Honor Society and was regularly on the Dean's List.

Steven is admitted to the bar in New York and Connecticut. He is also admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court and the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of New York.

Continuing legal education has been a significant part of Steven's career since graduating from law school. He completed a 500 hour advanced intensive trial advocacy program at the National College of Advocacy in Washington, D.C. and was awarded the highest designation, Diplomat, at its conclusion. Pro Bono service has also been a part of Steven's career. He has taught trial advocacy and moot court skills to High School students in undeserved neighborhoods of New York City as well as represented mentally ill individuals in Court proceedings.

In 2009 and 2010, Steven was named to the "New York Super Lawyers" list, a distinction awarded to the top 5 percent of New York's lawyers as chosen by their peers and the independent research of Reuters News Service. His listing was acknowledged by the New York Times in its Sunday magazine section. Recently, Steven has twice been a finalist in Lawdragon's 500 Leading Lawyers in America. In 2006, he was included on the list of "The Leading Plaintiff's Lawyers in America" published in Lawdragon Magazine. Steven was also awarded the rating of 10/10 ("Superb") by The AVVO Lawyer's Rating Service, a professional service which rates lawyers throughout the United States based on a scale of 0?10. In 2007, Steven received the Empire State Counsel Award from the New York State Bar Association for service to the community. In November 2010, Amtrak Magazine in conjunction with AVVO Lawyers Rating Service named Steven as one of the top 10 personal injury litigators in the Northeastern United States.

Steven has had tremendous success in litigating multi-million dollar personal injury lawsuits as illustrated by his lifetime membership in the Million Dollar Advocates Forum, which limits its members to Trial Lawyers who have a record of settling cases or obtaining jury verdicts for $1,000,000.00 or more.

Steven is a member of the New York State Trial Lawyers Association where he previously served on the Executive Committee and the Board of Directors. He is an active member of the American Association for Justice, an organization comprised of plaintiff's personal injury attorneys dedicated to preserving justice and fairness in the judicial system for injured individuals. Anthony T. JIM BARNA BRINGS A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE TO EMPLOYMENT LAW REPRESENTATION.

Throughout his career, Jim Barna has focused his practice on employment law.

"When I was young, I always knew that my future was in the law; and from the time I entered law school, I knew that employment law would be where I would focus my practice.â"

Jim did his undergraduate studies at Syracuse University and Stony Brook University.

Jim attended law school at Washington University in St. Louis, a Top Twenty law school with an extensive employment law curriculum. In law school in St. Louis, Missouri, Jim had a number of experiences that paved the way to his career litigating employment law cases.

"It started with a law school faculty of committed litigators who were recognized employment law authorities. From them I learned to navigate the complicated regulatory framework of federal and state employment laws. I was very interested in employment law, and I earned high marks in all my employment law classes."

During law school, Jim interned with a Federal judge. "This allowed me to see the litigation process from 'behind the bench,' so to speak, which gave me insight into the motivations of judges and juries in the legal process.â"

As a first year law student, Jim won a legal writing contest that resulted in his first scholarly article being published by the law school. The article dealt with an employment law topic: Keeping the Boss at Bay â Post-Termination Retaliation Under Title VII: Charlton v. Paramus Board of Education, 25 F.3d 194 (3d Cir. 1994), 47 Wash. U. J. Urb. & Contemp. L. 259 (1995). Jim had two scholarly articles published while he was in law school, which was a significant achievement. Jim went on to become the Articles Editor of the law review, and edited several law review articles related to employment law.

While Jim was in law school, he had the opportunity to work for a national leader in employment law and womenâs rights litigation, Mary Anne Sedey. âFrom Mary Anne Sedey, I saw that big cases can bring big changes, and that a life devoted to seeking justice can coincide with success for clients and attorneys.â

After he graduated from law school in 1996, Jim spent ten years working for nationally recognized employment law firms in Memphis, Tennessee, a center of labor and employment law work. During that time, he handled litigation matters in 22 states, and the District of Columbia.

In 2002, Jim was associate counsel, and coauthor of the victorious merits brief, in the first Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) case to be heard by the United States Supreme Court, Ragsdale v. Wolverine World Wide, Inc., 535 U.S. 81 (2002). He is a member of the Bar of the United States Supreme Court.

Jim is holds law licenses in New York, Maine, Tennessee, and Mississippi.

Throughout his career, Jim has continued to litigate significant employment law cases, and he continues to speak and write about developing employment law topics.

"One of my first cases in New York involved a former employee of a specialty chemicals company who had been terminated after developing bipolar disorder and becoming unable to work. The company had complied with the legal requirements before terminating him, so there was no claim for disability discrimination. After interviewing the client, I discovered that for years the company had failed to pay him overtime, and that he was owed a large amount of money in unpaid compensation. Until I informed him of this, the client did not know that he was entitled to overtime. I brought a lawsuit in Federal court on his behalf, and I was quickly able to negotiate a settlement that put him in a much more positive financial footing. Sometimes to find justice you need to uncover claims and theories that arenât apparent at first."
