Though I was born in Spokane, Washington and presently reside in Clark County, Washington, I have spent a good portion of my life residing in the Portland-metropolitan area. As a result, one of my objectives as a lawyer has always been to represent people in both Oregon & Washington.

I enrolled at Gonzaga University School of Law in 1996. That summer following my first year at Gonzaga, I was elected as an associate editor for the Gonzaga Law Review. and was also hired as a legal intern for Columbia Legal Services. This is where my exposure and love for family law began. As a Rule 9 intern for Columbia Legal Services, I counseled and represented clients in the areas of divorce, custody, vidsitation, child / spousal support, and domestic violence. My article entitled, "Providing Equal Justice for the Domestic Violence Victim: Due Process and the Victim's Right to Counsel" would later be published in the Gonzaga Law Review. In 1999, I graduated from law school in the top 1/3 of my class and passed the Washington State Bar Exam. I subsequently passed the Oregon State Bar exam in 2004.

Following law school, I was an associate attorney for three years in a prominent, AV-rated law firm in Longview, Washington. There too my practice focused on family law. While practicing law in Longview, I was active in the legal community serving as a board member for the Cowlitz County CASA, Cowlitz-Wahkiakum County Legal Aid Program, and served as the vice president/president-elect for the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum County Bar Association.

I am an active family law practitioner in Clark County, Washington as well as Multnomah, Washington, Clackamas and Columbia County, Oregon. I have represented clients and appeared in court on behalf of clients in other counties in both states. Prior to establishing my own firm, I practiced law in Portland for four years and represented both Oregon and Washington clients in high-asset divorce cases and other family law matters while employed by a Portland family law firm. In 2008, I co-founded Martin & Veley, P.C., with offices in downtown Portland, Oregon and Camas, Washington. In addition to providing a full-service family law practice, our firm also practices in the areas of real estate and construction law, collections, contracts, and general and business civil litigation.

I was a Deputy District Attorney for over 12 years prior to becoming a criminal defense attorney. I worked in Tulare and Orange Counties, prosecuting every type of criminal case, including driving under the influence, theft, three strikes, domestic violence, gang cases and homicides. I spent six years in the prosecution of serious sexual assault cases. For over a year, I worked closely with law enforcement in a narcotics task force assignment. That assignment included extensive work on search warrants and wiretap cases. I have handled thousands of cases during all stages of criminal prosecution – from case assessment and the filing of criminal charges to trial and sentencing.

During that time, I worked uniformed patrol and was involved in all aspects of criminal investigation, from traffic stops to bank robberies and homicide cases. During my time in the academy, I received honors as the top cadet in academics and firearms. I was also given the highest award and named Honor Cadet by the Sheriff’s Department.

In addition to being a trial lawyer, I have taught extensively on many aspects of the law. I currently teach all areas of criminal law at a state-approved police academy, including courses on search and seizure law, criminal interrogation and the laws of arrest. I also teach a course on homicide investigation at a local community college. I have trained other prosecutors during seminars for the California District Attorney’s Association (CDAA) in the areas of trial tactics and crimes against children.

After leaving the DA’s office, I opened my own practice, focused exclusively on criminal defense. As a solo practitioner, every client gets my personal representation - not a junior associate or an attorney unfamiliar with the facts.

Mr. King began his legal career with the Sacramento County Public Defender's Office as a California State Bar Certified Law Student. He has defended juveniles during Sacramento County Juvenile Court detention hearings, assisted psychiatric patients placed on Conservatorship holds, and represented in-custody and out-of-custody clients during Sacramento Superior Court misdemeanor arraignments. Since opening his own practice, Mr. King now appears in the Sacramento, Placer, Yolo, Yuba, Nevada, Alameda, El Dorado, San Joaquin, and Solano County Courts on DUI, criminal, traffic, juvenile, and family law matters. He has effected dismissals ranging from domestic violence temporary restraining orders to felony conspiracy, and negotiated multiple plea bargains with county prosecutors. In addition, he regularly litigates family law matters ranging from child custody and support to non-contested marital dissolution.

Ms. Henderson has been representing clients in criminal and juvenile cases since 1997. Her clients have been found not guilty on all counts in over half of her trials. The focus is always to understand the personal needs of the client (obtaining employment in the future, licensing, how the case impacts the client personally, professionally, legally and emotionally.) Often times success is gauged in reducing time,protecting the client's record for the future (avoiding strikes, priors, prison) and looking at alternative sentences.

The approach to criminal defendants in most counties in California is very impersonal and often times unbending. The legislature has limited many of the protections that were once afforded people accused of a crime. They allowed themselves to be influenced by fear and a corrections model. Many of our clients today pled guilty to a strike, either as a very young person or when they were juveniles not knowing the affect it would have in the future. Those strikes are alleged on most complaints to encourage you to plead,increase the penalty, and require a prison sentence. One way to avoid this is to educate yourself and others about their legal rights so that they do not make the same mistakes the previous generation has made.

If bail is a possibility let your attorney know. In Sacramento a two day notice for bail or release on OR must be given to the District Attorney. Decisions that an attorney can make for you are whether requesting a reduction in bail will risk it being raised significantly and whether the judge that you are in front of is one who will listen fairly to the facts. Clients are often much better off out of custody so that they can access services through their own resources to show the court that the allegations are either not true or an anomaly.

The Sacramento jail has been the subject of numerous law suits and suicides in the past several years and is not a place where you or anyone you care about should stay for any length of time. Ms. Henderson's concern for the medical, mental health care and conditions in the juvenile halls and jails has led her to involvement in civil rights cases against the Sacramento County jail.
