Volunteer Lawyers Project of the Boston Bar Association was established in 1977 to provide legal representation in civil matters to the indigent of Boston through the pro bono services of private attorneys and paralegals. It is among the oldest organized pro bono efforts in the country. In 1996, VLP broadened its scope when it became the grantee of the federal Legal Services Corporation for the Greater Boston area. VLP also supports the Legal Advocacy and Resource Center (LARC) to operate a hotline to screen and refer clients to appropriate legal and social services and/or advise clients when services are not available or necessary. All efforts are augmented by a modest in-house case handling capacity.

CLSACC offers free civil legal assistance for people with low incomes. We provide assistance in the areas of family law and domestic violence, housing and homelessness prevention, disability benefits, and immigration and refugee rights.

Greater Boston Legal Services (GBLS) provides free civil (non-criminal) legal assistance to low-income people in Boston and thirty-one additional cities and towns. The help we offer ranges from legal advice to full case representation, depending on client need. GBLS serves families whose yearly income does not exceed 125% of Federal Poverty Income Guidelines ($25,813 for a family of four). Our staff of 68 attorneys and 27 paralegals is divided into areas of legal expertise to best address the problems faced by people living in poverty. A national leader in poverty law, GBLS also undertakes representation and legal advocacy to address the root causes of poverty.

The mission of South Middlesex Legal Services is to provide legal advocacy to protect and advance the rights of the poor, elderly, disabled and other disenfranchised people in our service area (listed below) in obtaining legal, social and economic justice. Neighborhood Legal Services is a free provider of civil legal assistance for low income residents of Essex County, Massachusetts. Part of a larger national network of legal services providers, NLS helps our area's low income residents with legal problems involving access to housing, access to public assistance, employment rights, discrimination, elder law, domestic violence and family law, and economic development of our area's low income communities.

MVLS is a legal aid program which provides free legal advice and representation in civil legal cases to low-income and elderly residents of parts of Essex and Middlesex counties. Since 1974 MVLS has represented victims of domestic violence, clients from becoming homeless, children with special needs, elderly and disabled people in obtaining disability, welfare, and medical benefits, people making the transition from welfare to work, and those denied unemployment compensation.
