Over the past year, Attorney Kate Godin has enjoyed several major successes in representing criminal defendants. From trying (and winning) a multiple count child molestation trial, to obtaining a dismissal in a child abuse case, Kate has shown that she is willing to challenge the State at every turn. In fact, Kate recently helped (successfully) challenge a provision of the Penalties section of Rhode Islandâs Sexual Offender Registration and Community Notification Act, R.I.G.L. Â§Â§ 11-37.1-1 et seq. After writing three legal memoranda and a filing civil complaint in the case, Superior Court Presiding Judge Rodgers found that R.I.G.L. Â§ 11-37.1-10(c) was an unconstitutional Taking as it applied to the client. In addition to significant results in major felony cases, Kate has also represented several clients in 32(f) proceedings, motions to expunge, and district court arraignments.

Kate is a member of the National Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Rhode Island Association for Criminal Defense Lawyers, the Rhode Island and Massachusetts Bar Associations, the Rhode Island Association for Justice, and is a recent graduate of the National Criminal Defense College. She is licensed to practice in both Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Kate graduated fourth in her class, magna cum laude, from Roger Williams University School of Law. During her time at Roger Williams, Kate strove for the best academic and practical legal experience she could receive. From teaching law to high school seniors at Cranston East in Roger Williams' "Street Law" program, to becoming a semi-finalist in the law school's Moot Court competition, to becoming a co-captain of the Roger Williams' Trial Team, Kate took full advantage of the wonderful opportunities her legal education had to offer. State, 936 A.2d 588 (R.I. 2007), and the other to the United States Supreme Court in the Exxon Valdez oil spill case of Exxon v. Baker , 128 S.Ct. 2605 (2008).

Kate developed her focus and strong work ethic during her time as eight-time high school National Champion in the hammer and 20-pound weight throws. Throughout high school and college, Kate competed against national record-holders and Olympians, even beating the 2000 Olympic gold medalist at the Junior World Championship in Santiago, Chile at the age of sixteen. She received training at the United States Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, CA, and from world record-holder Yuri Sedykh. She is a former high school national record-holder, and a NCAA finalist. Finishing her athletic career upon graduation with distinction from the Pennsylvania State University (where she obtained a double major in Crime, Law, & Justice and Sociology, and a minor in Women's Studies), Kate left behind her passion for athletic competition for a career in criminal law and litigation.

During his time in Governor Bush's Legal Office he had diverse responsibilities, including oversight and strategic litigation management of significant legal matters at numerous Governor's agencies, including the Department of Education; Department of Management Services; Department of Business and Professional Regulation; Department of Health; Agency for Health Care Administration; Department of Children and Families; Department of Community Affairs; Department of Elder affairs; Agency for Workforce Innovation; Department of Transportation, and the Department of State. He was also legally responsible for topics as diverse as emergency operations; advising the Governor on the selection of judges; implementation of civil service reform; reform of workers' compensation; budget and appropriation matters; Indian gaming law; and advice to the Florida Cabinet sitting in its many capacities, such as the Florida Land and Water Adjudicatory Commission.

Daniel Woodring was then asked to be the General Counsel for the Florida Department of Education, which encompassed Pre-K though 12th Grade, community colleges and the Florida University System. He was also the Charter General Counsel for The Board of Governors, when that board was constitutionally created to manage the State University System. EXPERIENCE
Mr. Smith has been a trial attorney for 29 years. For the past nineteen years he has represented primarily individuals in plaintiff's personal injury litigation. In 2006 he obtained a record $7.2 million verdict in a wrongful death case in Warren County, Tennesee. He served as plaintiffs' counsel in the Tri-State Crematory class action litigation against Georgia Farm Bureau ($80 million judgment) and represented class members who received $36 million in settlements.

He has been recognized by his peers as one of the Best Lawyers in Lawyers in America in Personal Injury Litigation and as one of the Best Lawyers in Tennesse by Business Tennessee, a statewide business journal, in the 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2007 editions. Mr. Smith was also named a Mid-South "Super Lawyer" in 2007. The Business Tennessee Best Lawyers List described Mr. Smith as "An all-star across the state." The list identified attorneys from all regions of the state and recognized Mr. Smith as one of seven "best lawyers" in Tennessee in the area of Personal Injury (Plaintiff) practice.

He has tried over 100 cases in state and federal courts throughout the nation, in Tennessee, Texas, Missouri, Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Kentucky, Indiana, Mississippi, Florida, Ohio, South Carolina, Virginia, Montana, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Washington D.C.

He began in private practice with the national law firm of Baker & Botts in Houston, Texas (1978-1983). He served as an Associate Professor of Law teaching Torts, Evidence and Professional Responsibility at Vanderbilt University School of Law (1983-1988). Mr. Smith also presented expert testimony to the landmark Presidential Commission on the Human Immunodeficiency Virus Epidemic, Hearings on Discrimination, Ethics and Testing, Vanderbilt University,Nashville, TN, March 16-18, 1988. In his testimony Mr. Smith advocated federal laws to protect privacy in testing and to outlaw discrimination of persons with HIV/AIDS. Of interest, the opposing expert view was presented at this panel by then federal judge Kenneth W. Starr (later Independent Counsel on the Whitewater matter).

Steve Cody was born in Massachusetts, but has has lived in Florida almost all of his life. He received his Bachelor's degree from Florida State University and then went on to receive his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Florida College of Law.

Steve concentrates his practice in the areas of litigation and appellate work. Jason Gonzalez (born September 30, 1973) currently serves as General Counsel to Florida Governor Charlie Crist. [1] He was the chief advisor to Governor Crist on the appointment of four of the seven Justices currently serving on the Florida Supreme Court.

Jason Gonzalez was born in Tallahassee, Florida, the son of Larry Gonzalez (former Secretary of the Florida Department of Professional Regulations and Director of the Florida Commission on Ethics) and Jean Gonzalez. A seventh generation Floridian, Gonzalez is the great-great-grandson of Captain Manuel Gonzalez, who founded the City of Ft. Myers, Florida in 1866,[2] and the great-great-great-great-grandson of Evander Lee, who founded the City of Leesburg, Florida in 1857.[3] Gonzalez attended the University of Florida where he graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate degree. He became an attorney and Florida Bar member in 1998. While in law school, he married his high school sweetheart Sara Hicks Gonzalez. Jason and Sara are the parents of three boys.

Legal Career

Following law school Gonzalez joined the Tallahassee firm of Ausley & McMullen, P.A. as an associate attorney. His practice consisted of trial and appellate litigation. He was named a shareholder in the Firm in 2003. Gonzalez served as special counsel to the Bush/Cheney 2004 Campaign. In 2006 he was named General Counsel to the Republican Party of Florida by Chairman Jim Greer. As General Counsel, Gonzalez served as chief lawyer and member of the Executive Board of the Republican Party. In 2007 Governor Charlie Crist appointed Gonzalez to the State Executive Committee of the Republican Party of Florida as an at-large member. Gonzalez served as President of the Tallahassee Chapter of the Federalist Society, a conservative law and public policy organization. In 2005-2006, Gonzalez represented the Institute for Justice before the Florida Supreme Court in the Bush v. Holmescase that considered the constitutionality of Florida's school voucher program.

Public Service

Judicial Nominating Commissions

In 2001 Gonzalez was appointed by Governor Jeb Bush to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Second Circuit and served as Chairman of the Commission in 2003. In 2004 Governor Bush appointed Jason to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Florida First District Court of Appeal, which he chaired in 2006. In 2007 Governor Charlie Crist appointed Gonzalez to the Judicial Nominating Commission for the Florida Supreme Court.

Throughout his service on the Judicial Nominating Commissions, Gonzalez was known as a staunch advocate of judicial restraint. In an article published in 2006, Gonzalez wrote that judges should follow an "originalist-textualist" approach in applying the law. [4] According to Gonzalez, Courts should faithfully apply the text of our Constitution and Statutes, interpreting the meaning of the text based on the common usage of the words at the time of enactment. [5] He uses the infamous case of Plessy v. Ferguson, establishing the separate but equal doctrine, as an example of harmful judicial activism where the Court departed from plain text of the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. [6]

General Counsel to Governor Charlie Crist

Jason Gonzalez was appointed General Counsel to Florida Governor Charlie Crist in 2008. As General Counsel he is the chief advisor to the Governor on all legal matters and serves as the Governor’s Chief Ethics Officer and chief advisor on judicial appointments. In 2008-2009 Gonzalez was the chief advisor to Governor Crist on the appointments of four Florida Supreme Court Justices: Justice Charles Canady; Justice Ricky Polston; Justice Jorge Labarga; and Justice James Perry. The four appointments marked the first time in Florida history that a Governor appointed a majority of the Court in less than a year.[7]
