MidPenn Legal Services is a private, non-profit, public-interest law firm dedicated to providing equal access to justice and high quality legal services to low income persons and survivors of domestic violence in central Pennsylvania. MidPenn was created in 2000 through the merger of three similar programs that have been in existence since the 1970’s, each of which has a long history of working for these same goals. MidPenn has a highly qualified and dedicated staff and a governing board committed to serving our client community.

The Westmoreland Pro Bono Program was formed by the Westmoreland Bar Association and Westmoreland Bar Foundation to help Laurel Legal Services, Inc., provide the best legal representation to eligible clients in the county. Attorneys who participate in the Pro Bono Program volunteer their time and represent clients at no cost.

The Allegheny County Bar Association has more than 60 active committees working on and discussing legal issues that affect the general public. Those committees have produced several successful on-going programs that are free to the public.

In 1966, with the encouragement of the Allegheny County Bar Association, NLSA was chartered as a private non-profit Pennsylvania corporation. (NLSA Incorporators) Its primary goal was to provide legal assistance to the poor in the Pittsburgh area. In 1974, NLSA expanded its service area to include Beaver, Butler, and Lawrence Counties and has since established a 30 year tradition or providing equal access to the law in all 4 counties. In 1997, NLSA became part ot the Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Consortium along with Laurel Legal Services and Southwestern Pennsylvania Legal Aid. The co-operative efforts of this group have led to greater awareness of the needs of the entire area and the rise of new programs to meet those needs.

Our cases are restricted to emergency cases only in eacharea of the law. However, we provide brief telephone service in some of the areas of law.

The By-Laws of the Dauphin County Bar Association include a commitment "to encourage the fulfillment of the obligations of the profession among its members to the courts and to society, [and] to promote programs to provide effective, affordable legal services to all segments of society . . ." In keeping with this responsibility, all members of the Bar Association are expected to participate, personally or financially, in the Pro Bono Program, which is administered in conjunction with MidPenn Legal Services.
