Abed Awad

Abed Awad is an attorney, public speaker, and community leader. His practice in the New Jersey-New York area focuses on general civil litigation, including complex matrimonial law, commercial law, Islamic law and international law.

As an expert witness and consultant, Mr. Awad combines his academic knowledge of shari’a (Islamic law) and the laws of Arab countries with practical litigation acumen and strategy. These attributes give his expert opinions a decisive edge. Mr. Awad has testified or provided expert reports concerning the interpretation and application of shari’a (Islamic law), Egyptian law, Syrian law, Qatari law, Kuwaiti law, United Arab Emirates law, Moroccan law, Palestinian law, Jordanian law, Lebanese law, Saudi Arabian law, Iraqi law, Libyan law and Ja’fari law.

Mr. Awad has received an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell. An "AV" rating identifies a lawyer with a very high, preeminen, legal ability and is the highest reflection of expertise, experience, integrity and overall professional excellence.

Prior to entering private practice, Mr. Awad was the Law Clerk for the Honorable George E. Sabbath of the New Jersey Superior Court. Mr. Awad is an Adjunct Law Professor at Rutgers Law School, Newark, Pace Law School, New York, and Seton Hall Law School, Newark. He teaches three courses: (1) Islamic Jurisprudence; (2) Islamic Banking and Finance; and (3) Matrimonial Litigation.

Mr. Awad is a frequent political and legal commentator for numerous television and radio networks, including but not limited to The New York Times (video interview), ABC, CNNfn, CNN, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Al-Jazeera, BBC World Service Radio, BBC World Service Arabic Television, National Public Radio (NPR), Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC), Al-Rafidain TV, Al-Qataria, Al-Saah TV, Al-Arabia, Channel 4 (England), Shams Radio, Vatican-Arabic Radio, Monta Carlo Radio, and The Voice of Arabs Radio (Cairo).

In addition to his Juris Doctorate, Mr. Awad holds a Masters in Near and Middle East Studies from the University of London, and a Certificate in Comparative Law also from the University of London. Mr. Awad was a Managing Editor on Pace International Law Review and has been published extensively on different areas of the law in various publications, including in the ABA’s The International Lawyer, New Jersey Law Journal, Pace International Law Review, The National Law Journal, The Matrimonial Strategist, The Journal of the Legal Profession and Middle East Executive Reports.
